INTRODUCTION

Ever since the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th century, progress and prosperity have been closely identified with economic development.Technical Education in the state began in 1972 when the first Polytechnic ie. Nagaland Polytechnic was established at Atoizu in Zunheboto now renamed as Khelhoshe Polytechnic. Subsequently Women's Polytechnic (now Government Polytechnic) and Institute for Communication and Information Technology (ICIT) were also established in 1994 and 2003 respectively.  Thus the State now has three technical institutes offering three-year engineering diploma programs in civil, electrical and electronics, mechanical, automobile, computer science, electronics and communications, information technology, modern office practice and an advanced diploma program in apparel production and Under the GOI Skill development programs, 6 (six) new Polytechnics have been sanctioned and construction works have started since the last 3(three) years.

Mission

The economic competitiveness of a State depends on the skills of its work force. The skills and competencies of the work force, in turn, are dependent upon the quality of the Technical education and training systems. Technical  Education is perceived as one of the crucial elements in enhancing economic productivity. Based on social efficiency theory, Technical Education aims in preparing and supplying future workers with appropriate knowledge and skills to enhance their productivity and, therefore, promote economic growth.Rising unemployment, lack of skilled workers, high dropout rates, and the changing demographic nature of the work force have placed the issue of workforce education high on the educational reform agenda.

Traditionally, Technical Education has prepared students for specific skills. However, in the work environment, workers are expected to perform more broadly-defined jobs. Therefore, a broad-based education is being imparted. In the new economic environment, Technical Education is expected to produce an educated, skilled, and motivated work force on the assumption that economic growth and development are technology-driven and human capital-dependent.
